FIFA ranking points change after counted international matches. The men's SUM formula is P = Pbefore + I x (W - We).
W is the actual result share. We is the expected share from the points gap. I is match importance. A team that beats expectations gains points. A team that falls short loses points.
Match importance scales how many points move. Friendlies use 5 or 10. Qualifiers usually use 25. Continental knockouts from the quarter-finals use 40. World Cup group and round of 16 use 50. World Cup quarter-finals and later use 60.
The points already include matches FIFA has counted since the last official ranking. Open step 2 only for a match played after those points were saved.
Pick the correct match importance before you calculate. Treating a qualifier as a friendly understates the swing.
