Elo Rating in Football and FIFA Rankings
Many FIFA ranking calculator and football Elo searches are looking for the same idea: stronger teams should be expected to win, and surprises should move ratings more.
FIFA's men's ranking since 2018 is Elo-inspired (SUM), not the old average-based system.
The core Elo idea
Classic Elo compares two ratings, converts the gap into an expected score, then updates both ratings from the difference between expected and actual results.
FIFA uses the same spirit for national teams with We = 1 / (10^(-dr/600) + 1).
What FIFA changes
- Match importance I replaces a single K-factor for all games
- Scaling uses divisor 600 in the expected-result curve
- Penalty shoot-outs use W = 0.75 / 0.50 instead of a simple win/loss
- Points accumulate on a SUM basis rather than a long decaying average
Club Elo is not FIFA ranking
Independent club Elo sites are popular, but they are not the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. This calculator targets FIFA's published men's national-team method.
For official men's positions see the ranking table; for math detail see ranking points.
